Oswego Varsity Bounces Back with a Strong Shutout after Friday’s Loss

The Oswego Hockey Club Varsity kicked off their opening weekend against the DuPage Stars and the Lincoln-Way Lancers. While they came away with a tough loss on Friday, a dominant shutout victory on Saturday showed just how dangerous the team can be when firing on all cylinders.

It was a challenging night for the Oswego Varsity on Friday, as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the DuPage Stars in a game that saw the team outshot by a wide margin of 45-15. Despite the disparity in shots, Oswego’s goalie Carter put on an incredible performance, turning away 41 of the Stars' attempts.

Oswego's offense was led by Aidan Quinn, who got the team on the board in the first period, with a goal assisted by Justin Carbone. The second tally came from Colin Brinkman, who capitalized on a power play, also with an assist from Carbone. But DuPage’s power play, fueled by goals from Boucher and Bass, as well as even-strength tallies from Woodring and Gorz-Capistran, proved to be too much to overcome.

Despite a valiant effort, including a number of key penalty kills, Oswego couldn’t keep pace with DuPage’s relentless attack. Oswego spent time in the penalty box throughout the game, with Quinn, Brinkman, and Kubek all taking trips to the sin bin. At the end of the night, it was a tough loss, but the team knew they’d have to regroup quickly.

The next day, Oswego came out with a vengeance, shutting out the Lincoln-Way Lancers 4-0. The team played with energy and discipline, matching their stellar defensive play with offensive fireworks.

Colin Brinkman recorded two goals, including an unassisted tally and a penalty shot goal that showcased his poise under pressure. Dean Matson also chipped in with a goal, which was assisted by Jack Smith, while Matson added an empty-netter late in the game, with helpers from Colin and Alex Brinkman.

On the defensive side, Carter again stood tall in net, stopping 44 shots to earn his first shutout of the season. His calm demeanor and sharp reflexes kept the Lancers from getting any momentum, despite their barrage of shots.

In addition to the offensive outburst, Oswego’s penalty kill was stellar, denying Lincoln-Way on all their power play opportunities. Even with penalties from Lopez, Quinn, A. Brinkman (twice), and Matson, the team stayed focused and disciplined, showcasing an improved defensive effort.

The Oswego Hockey Club will be back on the ice next weekend with their sights set on another pair of victories. Keep an eye out for more updates, and make sure to come support the team!
